The Harry S. Truman Chapter in Independence, Missouri is part of the Missouri Society
of the Sons of the American Revolution (MOSSAR). The Harry S. Truman Chapter was organized on August 4, 1984 as
a membership organization of men whose lineal ancestors supported the Patriot cause during the War for Independence. The private,
non-profit organization is a society of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and its purposes,
as outlined in its constitution, are patriotic, educational, and historical. An all-volunteer organization, the Harry S. Truman Chapter takes
its responsibility as a guardian and interpreter of history seriously.
The planning meeting to organize a chapter in Independence
was conducted by MOSSAR President Charles Rainwater Wollard on July 7, 1984 at the Van Horn High School Library.
The
Chapter was officially presented it charter at a meeting held at the Howard Johnson’s in Independence on August 4, 1984.
The first officers appointed by MOSSAR President Charles Rainwater Wollard to serve from August 4, 1984 to November 3, 1984,
were: Jerry C. Gilchrist, President; Rodney C. Tarter, Vice President; Lawrence L. Loker, Secretary-Treasurer; Clay H. Glenn,
Registrar; and Paul V. Sawyer, Chaplain.
